The College Trekking Map: From First Steps to Final Decision
For many families, the college admissions process feels like standing at the base of a mountain and being expected to climb up without a map or gear.
At College Trekking, we've walked this trail before. Here's how we guide your student from "Where do I even start?" to "I know exactly where I'm headed."
Each family's journey looks a little different. Some of the steps below vary depending on the package you choose and where your student is in the process. You can find detailed explanations of what is included in each package on our services page. We will also discuss the details during your initial consultation.

Phase 1: Planning the Trip
During this 60-minute conversation, we'll discuss your student's goals, where you are in the admissions process, and how College Trekking can help make the journey smoother.
Onboarding
Once you join College Trekking, you'll receive welcome materials that explain what to expect and how we'll work together. Our intake process helps us start the journey already knowing where your student stands.
Student Discovery
This is where your student's story starts to take shape. Through a resume builder questionnaire, an activities inventory, and a personal background review, we learn about their strengths, interests, and experiences. During this process, many students are surprised to see how much they've already accomplished.
Strategy Meeting
Next, we sit down together to review your student's profile and talk about their goals and interests. This conversation sets the direction for everything that follows.
Included with every package.
Phase 2: Journeying Through the Woods
This is the heart of the journey. Your student explores, plans, and prepares for college admissions with a trusted guide by their side.

We start with a broad exploration list, then narrow it as your student learns what matters to them. Your student reviews each school, takes notes, and evaluates fit based on academics, campus culture, cost, and personal goals.
From there, the list is refined into a balanced mix of likely, target, and reach schools.

Essay DevelopmentFor most students, essays begin over the summer, while they have time to think and write without the pressure of homework and looming deadlines. Students starting later in the process, like those in Summit Sprint, begin as soon as they join us. Either way, we guide your student through the personal statement from brainstorming to final draft. Additional, supplemental essays are available as a package add-on. The essays are always your student's own work, written in their own voice. College Trekking supports them by asking good questions so their story comes through clearly. |

Phase 3: Choosing the Final Destination
The summit is in sight. Now comes the exciting part: deciding where to go.
As decision letters arrive, we support your student through whatever comes next. If a school defers or waitlists them, we build a strategy for staying in the running. When acceptance letters come in, we compare offers side by side, weighing academics, campus fit, and cost, so your student can make an informed choice with confidence.
Long before senior year comes to a close, your student will have made a college decision your entire family can feel good about.
Instead of last-minute scrambling, you get calm and clarity, and a confident student who feels ready for what comes next.

Frequently Asked Questions
We'll talk about your student's goals, where they are in the college planning process, and how College Trekking can help. It's a relaxed conversation, not a sales pitch. You'll leave with clear options for the journey ahead.
What happens during our free consultation?
1
Meeting frequency depends on your student's needs and where they are in the process. For most packages, we meet quarterly, with more frequent meetings during busy seasons like essay writing and application submission.
2
How often do we meet?
That's completely normal. Teenagers grow and change, and their college plans often change with them. Our process is built to adapt. When new interests emerge, we adjust the college list and strategy together.
What if my student changes their mind?
3
Students are active participants in this process. They research schools, write their own essays, and make big decisions. While we guide, encourage, and keep everything on track, the journey itself belongs to your student.
How much work is expected from students?
4
Families are informed partners every step of the way. You'll know what's happening and why, without having to manage every detail yourself. Many families tell us the best part of working with College Trekking is getting to be a supportive cheerleader instead of the deadline enforcer.
How are parents/guardians involved?
5
Yes. All meetings take place online, which means we can work with families anywhere in the country.
6
Do meetings happen virtually?
You don't have to navigate the college admissions process alone. Let's map out a plan that fits your student.
